Personal Information we collect
Information you provide to us
- Account data, such as the account identifier provided to us by Apple Inc. through Sign in with Apple. Where you elect to use Apple’s private email relay, your underlying email address is not disclosed to us.
- Verification data, being the mobile telephone number you supply for verification and the fact and time of that verification. This number is not disclosed to persons with whom you communicate through the Service.
- Message and other user-generated content, such as the content of messages and images you send or receive through the Service.
- Communications that we exchange with you, including when you contact support or submit a report concerning another user.
Information generated through your use of the Service
- Telephone log data, including the originating and receiving telephone numbers, the date and time of messages, and routing and disposition information reported by carriers.
- Account and entitlement data, including the telephone number allocated to you, the date of allocation, your subscription status and your message allowance.
- Device data, such as an installation identifier, device model, operating system version and application version.
- Push notification tokens, which identify your device to Apple’s Push Notification service so that we can alert you to an incoming message.
- Online activity data, such as the screens you view and the features you use, recorded as events. Such events record the occurrence and timing of an interaction and do not include the content of communications.
- Server log data generated automatically in the ordinary course of operating the Service, including internet protocol addresses.
Information we do not collect
- Address book data. Where you grant the application access to the contacts on your device, that data is processed locally on the device in order to display a name in place of a telephone number. Address book data is not transmitted to, or stored by, us. Access may be declined without affecting your ability to use the Service.
- Precise geolocation data. We do not collect it.
- Biometric information and identity documents. We do not collect them, and we do not operate an identity verification process of that kind.
- Payment card information. All payments are processed by Apple. We do not receive or store payment card details.
- Personal Information from third-party data providers. We do not purchase, license or otherwise acquire Personal Information about you from data brokers or similar sources.
Tracking technologies
Our website uses only those cookies and local storage technologies that are necessary for it to function. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies on the website.
The application incorporates third-party software development kits (SDKs), including the Google AdMob SDK, which may collect device and advertising identifiers directly in order to deliver and measure advertising to users of the free tier. See Your choices for the controls available to you.
Push notifications
Where you enable notifications, alerts are delivered through Apple’s Push Notification service. You control how much a notification reveals, in the privacy settings of the application. Where you select the full preview, a portion of the message text is included in the notification payload and therefore passes through Apple’s Push Notification service in order to be displayed on your lock screen. Selecting a reduced preview causes the sender’s name, or a generic alert, to be sent instead, and no message text leaves our systems in the notification. Verification codes are never included in a notification preview.
How we use your Personal Information
We may use your Personal Information for the following purposes, or as otherwise described at or before the time of collection:
- Service delivery. To establish and administer your account, to allocate and maintain a telephone number for your use, to transmit, receive, store and display your communications, to administer subscription entitlements, and to respond to your support requests.
- Analytics and improvement. To understand how the Service is used and to improve its performance and reliability.
- Advertising. To deliver and measure advertising presented to users of the free tier.
- Compliance and protection. To comply with applicable law and lawful requests; to detect, investigate and deter fraudulent, abusive or unlawful activity; to enforce our Terms of Service; and to protect the rights, privacy, safety or property of any person.
- To create anonymous, aggregated or de-identified data, which we may use and disclose for any lawful business purpose.
We do not use the content of your communications for advertising, profiling, or the training of machine learning models.
We do not track you across applications and websites owned by other companies. The application does not request permission to do so, and advertising presented within it is served on a non-personalized basis. Should this change, we will request your permission and update this Privacy Policy before doing so.
How we share your Personal Information
- Telecommunications carriers. Message content and associated telephone log data are transmitted to and from the public telephone network by our carrier partners, who process that data as necessary to effect delivery.
- Service providers. Third parties that provide services on our behalf or help us operate the Service, such as hosting and infrastructure providers.
- Apple Inc. Authentication and all payment processing are performed by Apple in accordance with its own privacy policy.
- Advertising partners. Google LLC, through the AdMob SDK, in respect of advertising presented to users of the free tier.
- Recipients of your messages. Content you send is necessarily disclosed to the person to whom you send it, who may retain, copy or further disclose it. We are not responsible for such use.
- Professional advisors, such as lawyers, auditors and insurers, where necessary in the course of the professional services they render to us.
- Authorities and others. Law enforcement, government authorities and private parties, where we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary or appropriate for the compliance and protection purposes described above.
- Business transferees. Participants in a corporate transaction involving a merger, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets or similar proceeding.
We do not sell Personal Information for money. The use of advertising identifiers for personalized advertising may constitute “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising, or a “sale”, as those terms are broadly defined under certain state laws. See State Privacy Rights Notice for the controls available to you.
Your choices
- Advertising. Advertising presented to users of the free tier is served on a non-personalized basis, and the application does not request permission to track you across applications and websites owned by other companies. Should that change, permission would be requested, and may be declined or withdrawn at any time in the privacy settings of your device. Advertising is removed entirely by a ZippyText Plus subscription.
- Analytics. You may disable product analytics in the privacy settings of the application.
- Address book access. You may decline or withdraw access at any time in the settings of your device.
- Deleting content and closing your account. Deleting a conversation deletes its content. Deleting your account, which is available in the settings of the application, deletes your Personal Information and releases the telephone number allocated to you. A released number may subsequently be allocated to another user. We may retain information after closure where necessary to detect or resolve security, fraud and abuse issues, to comply with applicable law, or as otherwise permitted or required by law.
- Declining to provide information. We require certain Personal Information in order to provide the Service. If you do not provide information identified as required, we may be unable to provide the Service to you.
Industry opt-out mechanisms for interest-based advertising in mobile applications are available through the Digital Advertising Alliance’s AppChoices application at youradchoices.com/appchoices. We do not control, and assume no liability for, third-party or industry-association opt-out mechanisms.
Retention
We retain each category of Personal Information only for so long as is necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, and thereafter delete it. The criteria we apply are as follows:
- Message and image content is retained for a limited period sufficient for you to read and refer back to your own conversations, and is then deleted automatically. It is not retained indefinitely.
- Verification codes received at your number are retained for a materially shorter period than other message content, reflecting the fact that they are useful only briefly and are sensitive.
- Telephone log data and server logs are retained for as long as needed to operate the Service, investigate abuse and meet our legal and regulatory obligations.
- Account and entitlement data is retained for the life of your account.
- Analytics events are retained for a limited period sufficient to observe trends over time.
You need not wait for any of these periods to elapse. Deleting a conversation deletes its content, and deleting your account deletes your Personal Information and releases the telephone number allocated to you. We may retain information after closure of an account where necessary to detect or resolve security, fraud and abuse issues, or to comply with applicable law.
Other sites and services
The Service may contain links to websites and online services operated by third parties. Such links are not an endorsement of, or representation that we are affiliated with, any third party. We do not control those services and are not responsible for their actions. We encourage you to read their privacy policies.
Security
We employ technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect the Personal Information we collect. These include encryption of communications content at rest, encryption of data in transit, and the processing of received images in an isolated environment, which additionally removes embedded location metadata from those images. Security risk is inherent in all internet and information technologies, and we cannot guarantee the security of your Personal Information.
We are established in the United States and the Service is operated from the United States.
Children
The Service is not intended for use by anyone under 13 years of age, or under 16 years of age with respect to residents of California, Montana and Oregon. We do not knowingly collect Personal Information from children below the applicable age. If you are a parent or guardian and believe that we have collected Personal Information from a child in a manner prohibited by law, please contact us and we will comply with applicable legal requirements to delete the information.
Several states restrict targeted advertising to, and the sale of Personal Information of, consumers known to be minors. We do not knowingly process the Personal Information of any consumer known to us to be a minor for purposes of targeted advertising, and we do not sell Personal Information.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We reserve the right to modify this Privacy Policy at any time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by updating the date of this Privacy Policy and by notice within the application or other appropriate means. Any modification is effective upon posting, or as otherwise indicated at the time of posting. Your use of the Service after the effective date indicates your acceptance of the modified Privacy Policy.
